MERJE’s Manchester office recently had the pleasure of hosting two young college students for their work experience week.

Isla and Sam got stuck in to the many day-to-day tasks required in a fast-paced recruitment office, including supporting marketing strategy development, content creation, database management and plenty more.

At the end of their busy week, we caught up with them to see what they thought of their work experience journey.

What was your favourite part of the week?

Isla: My favourite part of the week was finally grasping the contact database! After a day and a half of trying to get my head around it, I got the hang of it and actually enjoyed doing the data tasks.

Sam: I really enjoyed being in the office surrounded by great people.

What have you learnt this week?

Isla: I have recognised that patience is key and if at first you don’t get the hang of something, be patient with yourself and take your time.

Sam: I have learnt that it is good to split your time and work on different tasks every hour. This can save you time and stress as you’re not constantly doing the same job all day which can become repetitive and tiring.

Has this week helped you decide what you want to do in future?

Isla: I really enjoyed myself this week, but have realised that I would like to do something a bit more active instead of sitting at a desk all day.

Sam: I would say it has given me an idea of my strengths and things I can improve on which is a big step forward to deciding what I want to do in the future.

What do you think of the MERJE Manchester office?

Isla: The people really make you feel at home and are always offering help, drinks and food, etc. Jokes are always being made and everyone is always laughing. I have noticed that everyone is very supportive of each other which is really inspiring.

Sam: This is my first time working in an office and the atmosphere and people have been amazing. The office is clean, spacious, and close to good food options and the gym.

Are there any tasks you particularly enjoyed?

Isla: One of my favourite tasks was the social media audit. Because I am 17, social media is a big part of my life and it was interesting to see the different kind of posts, comments and phrases MERJE uses compared to me and my friends.

Sam: I also enjoyed the social media task. It was interesting to search MERJE’s social media and write about their accounts, seeing what is good, what could be improved, etc.

What do you think it would be like working at MERJE full time?

Isla: Without a doubt new employees will be made to feel welcome by the friendliness that MERJE has to offer. Although starting your first day at a new work is extremely nerve-wracking, it’s clear that MERJE will do everything in their power to make sure you settle in.

Sam: I think working at MERJE would be extremely enjoyable. You are surrounded by great people who only want the best for you and who will be there supporting you and pushing you to succeed. I have seen that everyone here is eager to be the best and make MERJE the greatest it can be.

How would you describe MERJE in three words?

Isla: Friendly, considerate and patient.

Sam: Amazing, friendly and welcoming.

A big thank you to Isla and Sam for all their hard work during their work experience week!
