1. Ensure that your CV is up-to-date and properly formatted

As you’ll be aware, your CV should be a reflection of your skills and prior experience. It is often the first impression an employer will get of you, and thus it ought to be perfect. Remember, the simplest of details can make a big difference – ensure that dates are correct, your most recent placement is listed and that your contact details are included.

2. Be prepared to invest a lot of time into your job search

In many ways, your job search is now your full-time job. This means that you should take it seriously. Instead of having brief 20-minute scans of job sites, designate longer time slots and assign yourself tasks and targets.

However, like normal work, it is important to maintain a balance so that it doesn’t take over your life. We advise that you take breaks to help you relax, and that you don’t continue with your search in the late hours of the night and, if you’ve been at it all week, try to have weekends off!

3. Focus your efforts onto a handful of vacancies, instead of targeting a large number of them

If you apply for 40 different jobs, it is impossible for you to invest the necessary time into the application process. Instead, MERJE recommends that you only apply for a few jobs initially. That way you will have time to provide a personalised CV to each firm, showing that you have the relevant abilities and attributes for the respective roles.

5. Dress appropriately for the occasion

33% of interviewers suggest that they know whether the candidate will be hired after the first 90 seconds of an interview. First impressions count for a lot, and so making the correct choice of attire is essential. As a general rule, corporate environments will prefer smarter dress, such as a suit, whereas smaller companies and start-ups may be more relaxed. 6. Actively listen to the interviewer

Active engagement with the interviewer is crucial for a number of reasons. On a basic level, being attentive will convince them of your skills as a good listener. Body language cues such as nodding are great indicators of this. Furthermore, by taking in what they are saying, you will be able to recount personal points made by the interviewer, allowing you to build a rapport with them.

7. Ask questions at the end

At the end of an interview, you will probably be asked if you have any questions for the interviewer. You should prepare some questions, and there are some formats that work a lot better to show that you are interested in the vacancy and the company itself. Anything that you ask should be open-ended, and appropriate questions might relate to the culture of the company or the structure of the team with which you’ll be working. It’s best to avoid asking salary-based questions unless the interviewer leads the conversation that way.
